8 Things to Let Go of Before Summer (So Your Home Feels Lighter)

Summer always brings that feeling that it’s time for a reset.
Not a full overhaul.
Not a pull-everything-out, overwhelm-yourself kind of day.
Just… the desire to feel a little lighter.
And I’ve noticed this over the years:
When my home feels heavy going into summer, it’s never because of one big thing.
It’s a bunch of small things…
things I’ve been holding onto longer than I need to.
So instead of trying to declutter everything at once…
I focus on a few specific things that always make the biggest difference.
1. The “Just in Case” Extras
We all have them, but I have always been a "backup for your backup" kind of girl.
The extra spatulas.
The backup containers.
The duplicates that made sense at the time.
But these are the easiest decisions you’ll make.
If you have more than one… start there.
This is the same simple shift that makes decluttering feel doable instead of overwhelming. I talked more about this here: https://www.easybutextra.com/post/10-things-to-declutter-today-for-an-instant-reset
2. Clothes You Didn’t Reach for This Spring
Before summer even starts, your closet tells you a lot.
What you wore.
What you skipped.
What never even made it into rotation.
If you didn’t reach for it when the weather was perfect for it…
you probably won’t now.
3. The “Almost Useful” Items
These are the tricky ones.
They technically work…but not well.
The container without a lid.
The tool that’s not quite right.
The thing you work around instead of using easily.
These quietly make your home harder to manage.
4. Things Sitting in “Temporary” Spots
This is one of the biggest hidden sources of clutter.
Items that, honestly, don’t have a “home” yet.
So they sit:
on counters
on chairs
on that bench in the entry
If it’s been there more than a few days… it’s not temporary anymore.
5. Worn-Out Towels, Linens, and Basics
This one is a tough one for me!
Summer is a high-use season.
More showers.
More laundry.
More everything.
If something is:
scratchy
thinning
just not pleasant to use,
you feel it every single day.
6. Old Cleaning Products You Don’t Use
This one surprises people.
Half-used bottles.
Products you tried once and didn’t love.
Things you keep “just in case”
They take up space and make cleaning feel more complicated than it needs to be.
“If this sounds familiar, this is exactly what I was talking about here: https://www.easybutextra.com/post/my-cleaning-favorites-that-actually-make-life-easier
7. The “I’ll Deal With This Later” Pile
Every home has one.
A basket.
A drawer.
A corner.
It’s where decisions go to wait.
And the longer it sits…
the heavier it feels.
You don’t have to do it all.
Just start with the top layer.
8. Things That Don’t Match Your Life Right Now
This is the one that matters most.
Items from a different routine.
A different season of life. (Literally)
A different version of you.
Not bad things.
Just… not right now things.
And those are often the hardest to let go of…
but the most freeing when you do.
Where a Little Structure Helps
Once you clear out what’s no longer working…
keeping things simple gets a lot easier.
But this is usually where things start to creep back in.
Not because you’re doing anything wrong…
just because there isn’t a clear place for things to land.
I have linked a few simple things HERE that give everything a place to land and make it easier to keep things from building back up.
The Easy but EXTRA Tip ✨
Don’t try to declutter everything at once.
Pick one category from this list and finish it.
That’s it.
I’ve found that having a simple way to contain and organize what stays makes this part so much easier without turning it into a big project. I've linked some of my personal favorites HERE.
Final Thought
You don’t need a massive reset to feel better in your home.
Sometimes it’s just a handful of small decisions…
made at the right time.
Let go of what’s been quietly building up…
and you’ll feel the difference almost immediately.
Lighter.
Easier.
Ready for the season you’re stepping into.
