Why Do We Feel Like We Have to Choose?

I buy nice things.

I also buy things from Dollar Tree.

Both can make me equally happy.

That probably sounds obvious, but lately I've been thinking about how often we feel pressured to choose a side.

Either you're practical or extravagant.

Either you're frugal or you appreciate luxury.

Either your home is beautiful or it's comfortable.

But real life rarely fits into those tidy little boxes.

Sometimes two things can be true at the same time.

Price and Value Are Not the Same Thing

I have a mug from Dollar Tree that I genuinely love.

It was inexpensive, it makes me smile, and I reach for it regularly. That little mug has earned its cabinet space.

I also have a Louis Vuitton handbag that cost considerably more than a dollar.

Quite a bit more.

And I love that too.

Not because the name on it makes me important. Not because I need anyone else to notice it. I love it because it was a gift, it's beautiful, and carrying it brings me joy.

The mug and the handbag don't cancel each other out.

One doesn't make me cheap.

The other doesn't make me materialistic.

They're simply two things I enjoy for completely different reasons.

That's why I've stopped believing the price of something tells the whole story.

Something inexpensive can become a favorite.

Something expensive can be worth every penny.

And something at either price can turn out to be a complete waste of money.

I Notice Beautiful Things

I'd be lying if I said I've never walked into a home and noticed the expensive furniture.

Of course I have.

I appreciate beautiful homes. I notice gorgeous lighting, pretty fabrics, thoughtful details, and all the little touches that make a room feel special.

Sometimes I've absolutely thought, Well...that must have cost a fortune.

But that's rarely why I remember the house.

I remember how I felt while I was there.

Did we laugh?

Did someone make me feel like they had nowhere else they needed to be?

Could I set my drink down without wondering if I'd picked the one forbidden table?

The furniture may be the first thing I notice.

The feeling is what stays with me.

A home can be impressive and welcoming.

It can have beautiful things and still feel relaxed.

It can be carefully decorated and clearly lived in.

That's the balance I love.

The Blanket Belongs on the Chair

My ideal reading nook would have a comfortable chair, good lighting, a place to set my coffee...and a blanket tossed over the side.

Not folded with military precision.

Not styled so perfectly that nobody wants to touch it.

Just there because someone actually uses it.

I want my home to look cared for.

I never want it to feel like the people living there have been edited out.

The blanket belongs in the room because the person belongs in the room.

That doesn't mean I suddenly stopped caring how things look. My brain likes order. I genuinely feel better when my surroundings are put together.

But organized and comfortable aren't enemies.

Neither are pretty and practical.

The best homes make room for both.

Many of my favorite everyday home finds that help my house feel both functional and welcoming are in my Amazon storefront HERE.

Maybe We Like Categories Too Much

I've noticed we like to put people into categories.

She's frugal.

He's extravagant.

They're minimalists.

She's high maintenance.

He's practical.

Life is usually much messier than that.

I can appreciate a beautiful designer handbag and still get excited over finding an organizer at Dollar Tree.

I can love an organized house and still want a blanket tossed over the arm of a chair because someone actually uses it.

I can enjoy beautiful things without believing they define me.

Maybe we spend too much time trying to figure out which box we belong in.

Maybe we're allowed to climb out of the boxes altogether.

Easy…but EXTRA Tip ✨

Stop asking whether something fits the image you think you're supposed to have.

Ask whether it fits your actual life.

Does it make your everyday easier?

Does it make you smile every time you use it?

Does it remind you of someone you love?

Does it simply make your home feel a little more like you?

Those are perfectly good reasons.

You don't have to justify every purchase to the internet.

If you're curious, the products that have genuinely earned a place in my everyday life are in my Amazon storefront HERE.

Final Thought

I've been loving one simple reminder lately:

Two things can be true at the same time.

Something can be funny and still make you mad.

A purchase can be expensive and still bring you joy.

You can appreciate luxury and still be careful with money.

You can admire someone else's beautiful home without wanting to trade lives with them.

You can love someone deeply and still recognize that the two of you experience the world very differently.

One truth doesn't erase the other.

Life is complicated.

People are complicated.

Homes are complicated.

Frankly...even handbags can be complicated.

I don't want a home filled only with expensive things.

I don't want one filled only with bargains either.

I want a home filled with things that have earned their place.

Some will be practical.

Some will be beautiful.

Some will remind me of a person, a trip, or a season of life.

Some will simply make me smile.

They don't compete with each other.

They get to exist together.

And honestly...

I think that's true of a lot more than just the things in our homes.
